Wine of the Month

Aug 19, 2024

For October, our wine of the month is the 2018 Merlot. The full-bodied, ruby red wine gently graces your nose with aromas of toasted chocolate, sweet cherries, and purple florals. The soft and smooth tannins mingled with dark cherry and raspberry will engulf your mouth, while black plum and mocha linger.

In 2017, our Merlot vines located in Wahluke Slope were torn out. This was quite sad for us, because we’ve harvested Merlot from this appellation since Latah Creek began in 1982. As we visited our vineyards during harvest, we sometimes sit down with the grape grower for a meal and chat. While eating lunch, we were served some of their 2016 Merlot, and absolutely loved it! Different from Wahluke Slope, the Ancient Lakes AVA (where we were located), has cooler weather, allowing the grapes to keep their pH levels balanced and the acid levels much higher. They can sometimes hang their fruit longer on the vines, which achieves maximum fruit flavor, while not being over-ripe. We began a contract with them to add Merlot and Malbec to our list of grapes contracted with them, which include Riesling and Chardonnay. This 2018 vintage is our first harvest of Merlot grapes, and we couldn’t be happier! Enjoy a bright, fruit-forward red wine, that is delicious with almost anything!
