2012 Merlot Read Tasting Notes

Ancient Lakes of Columbia Valley

BACKGROUND

Father/daughter winemaking team, Mike and Natalie, love their red wine repertoire. Merlot is one red wine that Latah Creek has made since its beginnings. This undervalued wine is always one to impress; full of fruit flavors and subtle tannins.

SOURCING

Ancient Lakes of Columbia Valley

VARIETAL

100% Merlot

WINEMAKING

This 2018 Merlot comes from a picture-perfect vineyard in the middle of an amazing appellation. With a southern facing slope, growing conditions here are near ideal. Because of this, very little input from the winemaker is needed - the wine almost makes itself. Other than encouraging a full malolactic fermentation, no other fining or additions were done. The wine was finished with nearly 18 months in oak before bottling.

TASTING NOTES

Mike’s favorite red variety is Merlot, which is why we still make this varietal on a regular basis. This full bodied, ruby red wine gently graces your nose with aromas of toasted chocolate, bright sweet cherry, and purple florals. Soft, smooth tannins mingled with dark cherry and raspberry engulf your mouth, while black plum and mocha linger on.

FOOD PAIRING

This wine provides an ideal accompaniment to beef, chicken, and pasta such as Ellena’s Fettuccine with Sautéed Mushrooms recipe in her latest cookbook, available at the winery.
