Latah Creek Reds

Latah Creek Carménère 2022

Mike and Natalie love this rare Washington varietal that showcases peppercorn, fresh raspberries, and cocoa nuances. Limited production wine.

Latah Creek Carménère 2022

Father/daughter winemaking team, Mike and Natalie, love their classic red wine repertoire, but they also love adding in new varietals.  This is why they leave about 25% of their annual production to wines not under contract.  It gives them the ability to try new varietals, new vineyard sources, or even bring back a favorite from years earlier.  The latter is this Carménère.  They made their only other Carménère in 2015 from this same vineyard source, and nearly 10 years since its release, they still have people reminiscing and asking for it back.  Unfortunately, the negative of not having contracts usually means the grapes are a one-time buy, and not available for future purchases.  And since this delicious varietal is not widely grown, their options were limited.  After asking if these grapes were available nearly every year since 2015, Natalie’s persistence paid off in 2022 when they were available again.

Natalie’s Tasting Notes

Being one of the original Bordeaux red varieties, but now is scarcely planted in France, the Carménère varietal holds many similarities to its counterparts, such as body and texture of Merlot, raspberry jam of Malbec, and pepperiness of Cabernets. But they are especially known for its green peppercorn character, and this wine is no exception. This is why we decided to bottle age it a bit longer, to let those flavors calm down a bit.  Now, it a well-balanced wine with medium-high acidity and medium tannins, and aromas of raspberries and fresh peppercorns. Delicious red and black berry flavors mingle with peppercorn and cocoa nuances on the palate.

Food Pairing

Enjoy this mouth-watering wine as an ideal accompaniment to beef, chicken, and hearty stews, such as Ellena’s Red Wine Tri-Tip recipe in her latest cookbook.
