A Brief Yet Unexpected History of Wine

Aug 22, 2024

History buff or not, you have to admit that there’s something special about knowing the story behind what you eat and drink. By making the connection from the world’s first wine grape to the latest bottle of wine adds another dimension to the experience and provides a deeper appreciation for this historic drink. Join me as I take you through a brief history of how wine came to be!

Believe it or not, the history of wine didn’t begin in France, although they do lay claim to the world’s most famed wine regions, including Bordeaux, which is known as the wine capital of the world. France is also home to the most popular varietals and wines such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, Champagne, Pinot Noir, and Sauvignon Blanc.

But, the history of wine dates back to 7000 BC and archaeological records indicate that wine was first produced in China. Armenia followed in 6100 BC and researchers discovered the world’s oldest winery there. Early winemaking is also evidenced in ancient Iran, Egypt, Israel, Greece, Cypress, and Sicily.

The history of wine makes it clear that there is way more than originally thought. The history of any wine begins its journey with the grapes being harvested, pressed, and fermented. There remains an incredibly rich history of wine and there’s no way I could detail every single location, discovery, or development for you. While I can’t put all the history into one blog, I’d recommend checking out this timeline of wine if you’re interested in learning more about the history of wine. Overall, your wine has a story and it’s much more than fermented grapes in a glass. Take it from me, that a lesson in history is something you can savor every time you take a sip of wine.

Cheers,
Natalie
