Latah Creek Reds
Latah Creek Reserve Mourvèdre 2022
Hailing from Washington State’s newest AVA, this Mourvèdre shines as a stand-out, beautifully structured wine with deep, savory character.
Latah Creek Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2021
Mike and Natalie, a father-daughter winemaking duo, are passionate about their collection of red wines, but they also enjoy experimenting with new varieties. This enthusiasm led them to create their Reserve Program, aimed at offering small-lot, high-quality wines that are not commonly produced. The inspiration came from Natalie’s desire to explore different varietals beyond their usual selections. By crafting 5 barrels or fewer of each distinct varietal, they ensure special care and attention is dedicated to these wines, which is why they proudly bear the Reserve label.
The region’s heat and wind contribute to smaller canopies (leaf cover) and berry sizes, leading to concentrated flavors, thicker skins, and higher tannins. Our Mourvèdre, sourced from the Beverly AVA, is a standout example of how red varieties flourish in this region. However, since it is a 2022 vintage and the appellation was not officially designated until 2024 (after our labels were printed), we have classified it under Columbia Valley AVA. This wine is beautifully intense, featuring rich red berry flavors intertwined with a robust tannic structure. This wine was produced in a larger quantity than our typical reserve bottlings, as four of the eight barrels were incorporated into our Mike’s Reserve Red no.4 blend. Natalie was especially drawn to the vibrant, bright fruit character this varietal is known for.
Natalie’s Tasting Notes
My parents discovered this varietal while planning a trip to Spain for their 50th Anniversary. Then, upon returning and opening their wines they brought home to share with me, we all realized this was a wine we needed to have in our Reserve Program. When poured, you are greeted with amazingly dark crimson color and aromas of plum, dried red berries, and a hint of fine tobacco and tropical fruit (odd, I know). Flavors of vibrant red berries seem to linger on forever.
Food Pairing
Since this wine is so fruit-forward, but with a smoky hint, I recommend any meat with berry-centric sauces. One of our favorites is Ellena’s Roast Pork with Spiced Red Wine recipe available online and in her latest cookbook.
