Ancient Lakes of Columbia Valley

BACKGROUND
During Latah Creek’s thirty-four years of producing Riesling, Mike has had the opportunity to use grapes from nearly every growing region within Washington State: Pasco/Tri-Cities, Sunnyside, Yakima Valley, Wahluke Slope, Rattlesnake Hills, and most recently the Ancient Lakes AVA. Of all these areas, father/daughter winemaking team, Mike and Natalie, believe the Ancient Lakes AVA consistently produces the best Riesling, thus a conversion was made to this area for all Riesling bottling’s since their first harvest there in the early 1990’s.

WINEMAKING
2018 was an interesting year for grape growing. Each month the temperatures were on one side of the spectrum of hot and cold. In April, it was cold enough that bud break was late. Then May was one of the warmest on record, putting ripening ahead of schedule. This was followed by June, which was cooler than normal. July and August temperatures were so warm, that heading into veraison, 2018 was looking to be the warmest on record. But then it cooled significantly in mid- September, creating ideal conditions for the grapes still on the vine. The 2018 Riesling was on the vines for almost a full month longer than the 2017 vintage, which gave the fruit tons of flavor. This wine was then fermented in stainless steel tanks at cooler temperatures, to retain its forward fruit characteristics. A higher acid level was left in the wine, to keep it from cloying, and make it fresh and crisp.

TASTING NOTES
The intensely aromatic wine begins with aroma of green apple and pineapple. Flavors of pear and apple immediately greet your tongue, while lime and a sweet minerality linger on.
