2012 Merlot Read Tasting Notes

Ancient Lakes of Columbia Valley AVA

Father/daughter winemaking team, Mike and Natalie, love their red wine repertoire, but they also love adding new wines into the mix. Such is the case with Malbec. This increasingly popular variety grows exceptionally well here in the environs of Washington State and produces a wonderful full-bodied red reminiscent of its French origin.

Ancient Lakes AVA, Familigia Vineyards

100% Malbec

This 2016 Malbec comes from a picture perfect vineyard in the middle of an amazing appellation. With southwest facing slopes running down to the Columbia River, growing conditions here are near ideal. Because of this, very little input from the winemaker is needed - the wine almost makes itself. Other than encouraging a full malo-lactic fermentation, no other fining or additions were done. The wine was finished with nearly 10 months in oak before bottling.

Ripe blackberry and raspberry aromas greet your nose immediately, with additional hints of dried herbs. This dark and intensely flavored wine fills your mouth with wonderful ripe berry characters while hints of oak, vanilla, and plum linger on long well after the wine is swallowed.

Enjoy this wine with meats, game, and robust, spicy meals such as Ellena’s Cracked Pepper Steak recipe in her latest cookbook.
